From July 6 through Sept. 6, 2026, Metro will conduct major construction on the Red Line, and trains will not operate between North Bethesda and Friendship Heights. Three stops will be closed: Grosvenor-Strathmore, Medical Center, and Bethesda. Free Local and Express shuttle buses will replace rail service to and from those three stops.
This project will accomplish several key goals, including connecting the Bethesda Red Line station to the Purple Line, and completing much-needed infrastructure upgrades at the impacted stations.
For the MD 355 (Wisconsin Ave) area adjacent to the closed Metro stations, auto and bus travel times may fluctuate based on time of day and traffic conditions. Along the Wisconsin Avenue corridor, curbside uses will be changed in Bethesda and Friendship Heights, and shuttles will be run along the corridor. Bethesda has the most intense curbside uses, and those will be changed during this period.
