Trader Joe’s Opens in Friendship Heights, Continuing Retail Growth

For Immediate Release

WASHINGTON, DC, DECEMBER 4, 2025 — Trader Joe’s has opened in Friendship Heights, and the neighborhood is celebrating. Trader Joe’s follows a series of high-profile retail announcements in the past few weeks, including Total Wine, TJ Maxx, and the announcement of a Wonder Food Bar coming soon.

“We’re excited about the retail growth in Friendship Heights, which further underscores this neighborhood’s immense potential to support more — more residents, more shoppers, more visitors, and more engaging experiences,” said Natalie Avery, executive director of the Friendship Heights Alliance. “As neighborhood stewards, we are always working to invite people into Friendship Heights, whether to enjoy an art gallery pop-up, play pinball, attend a community event, or take care of their daily needs and buy groceries.”

“Now that Trader Joe’s is open, Clarion Partners [owner of the retail, office and garage portions of Chevy Chase Pavilion on behalf of one of its commingled investment funds] will continue its efforts to reposition the retail portion of Chevy Chase Pavilion with neighborhood-serving retail and community shopping experiences,” said asset manager Harris Markowitz, who also serves on the Alliance board. “We are optimistic about the potential of Friendship Heights and the vision for this neighborhood to become more vibrant, walkable, and welcoming.”

Clarion Partners, as part of its commitment to Chevy Chase Pavilion and the Friendship Heights neighborhood, has provided space for the Pavilion Pop Up Gallery located off of the Wisconsin Avenue entrance, as well as the Zuk Pinball arcade.

The Friendship Heights Alliance continues to activate spaces in the neighborhood and has recently installed a gallery space, in partnership with Clarion Partners, adjacent to the Cheesecake Factory. Featuring local DC artists Lely Constantinople, Martina Fornace, Claire Packer, and Antonia Tricarico, the “TRACE” exhibition, up through January 10, explores human presence, memory, and the traces we leave behind through portraiture, landscapes, and mixed media.

And, Milk Tree by Bell Studios just announced nearly weekly open hours through the end of December. Created by artist Robin Bell, Milk Tree (5221 Wisconsin Avenue NW) transforms its environment into a living, light-filled experience that invites visitors to explore the interplay of organic forms and digital artistry. Select pieces from the collection will be available for purchase, allowing guests to take home a unique part of the experience.
