Anna Deriquito of York Flowers
February's business spotlight is dedicated to a legacy business that has been a part of many local celebrations: York Flowers.
Founded in 1947, York Flowers is a family-owned business that has flourished for generations. The current owner, Ken Denaburg, is the grandson of the original founder. The shop was initially located in the "Pete's Pizza" building before moving to its current location at 5023 Wisconsin Ave NW about 30 years ago. Over the years, York Flowers has expanded by acquiring businesses like Blackstone Florist (1996) and Clark's Florist (2000), ensuring their loyal customers continue to receive exceptional service.
Anna Deriquito, the Lead Event Associate, started as a floral processor in 2012. Over the years, she has heard countless stories from longtime clients who rely on York Flowers to bring beauty to their most memorable days. One of her favorite anecdotes: “One of our clients bought a bouquet here for his wife's first date. He continues to do this every year—they've now been married for 27 years! I've also had clients whose weddings we designed, and now we’re doing their kids’ weddings!”
Anna cherishes the deep-rooted relationships York Flowers has built in the community. She loves that Friendship Heights remains a family-oriented neighborhood—whether it's families picking out plants together, college students finding new "plant babies" for their dorms, or children excitedly discovering carnivorous plants in the store.
When asked what she loves most about Friendship Heights, Anna said: “Friendship Heights feels like the best of both worlds—you get amazing shopping and dining without the overwhelming city traffic. While we miss Paul’s, Farrow & Ball, and Palace Cleaners, we’re so excited to welcome Friendship Animal Hospital, Mulberry Cleaners, and Milk Tree! We hope to see more ‘paw traffic’—humans welcome too!”
