Rodman’s Discount Drug
For generations, Rodman’s Discount Drug has been woven into the daily life of Friendship Heights. What began as a small family pharmacy in the 1950s has grown quite literally into a neighborhood institution that generations of residents rely on and feel deeply connected to.
Founded by Leonard Rodman and now operated by his grandson Nolan, the business took root in its current location in 1964, initially occupying just a portion of the building. Over time, Rodman’s steadily expanded, absorbing neighboring spaces that once housed a bank, restaurant, hair salon, nail salon, and even a radio station in the basement. By the late 1960s and 1970s, Rodman’s had grown to fill the entire building, becoming the eclectic, treasure-hunt destination locals know today. That entrepreneurial spirit helped shape the store’s reputation for an unmatched selection and unexpected finds, all grounded in personal service and community trust. As the Rodman family likes to say, “If we don’t have it, you don’t need it.”
Today, as a third-generation owner, Nolan continues that legacy while planning for the future. The store is investing in infrastructure upgrades, including new refrigeration and freezer units, and exploring ways to bring the Rodman’s experience online through an e-commerce platform while preserving the character and charm that customers love.
Just as important, Nolan is leading a project to document the history of Rodman’s, recognizing that the story of the store is inseparable from the stories of its customers. From longtime shoppers to families who have passed down Rodman’s traditions, the community has helped shape what the store is today.
Rodman’s is inviting the community to be part of this history project. Customers are encouraged to submit memories, testimonials, vintage photos, old receipts, flyers, and other keepsakes connected to Rodman’s. Submissions can be emailed to rodmansonline@gmail.com, and all contributions will help preserve the story of a business that has meant so much to Friendship Heights for so long. We will also be working with our Youth Advisory Council to research and document important stories from our community.
As the neighborhood continues to evolve, Rodman’s remains a constant: rooted in history, shaped by its community, and ready for what’s next.
